My work space is half a block from Main Street, which is full of great restaurants and coffee shops. Here are some recommendations that are open for lunch, family-friendly, and reasonably accessible—and there are many more.
Within a short walk or short bus ride you can also find playgrounds, libraries, a water park, toy store, accessible indoor swimming pool, and Vancouver's Science World. Here are some details to get you started.
TEA SWAMP PARK
About a 5- to 10-minute walk north-east from my work space, this pocket park and wood-chip playground is intimate and great for all ages.
PRINCE EDWARD PARK / WATERPARK
About a 10- to 15-minute walk south-east from my work place is a large public park, wood-chip playground, and accessible waterpark (operating approx. late June to August).
MOUNT PLEASANT PARK
About a 10- to 15-minute walk north-west from my work space, you will find an accessible playground that is part of a large public park perfect for picnics.
HILLCREST COMMUNITY CENTRE
The Hillcrest Community Centre is one of the newest facilities in Vancouver, originally used for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Here you will find an accessible swimming pool, skating rink, library, and more. Take the 3 Main bus southbound on Main St. (at 16th Ave) for six stops to 30th Ave E. (about 5 minutes) and then walk three blocks west along 30th Ave.
SCIENCE WORLD
This is one of Vancouver's most popular tourist attractions for children and young teens. You can spend hours at this facility, which also includes snacks bars, restaurants, and an accessible OMNIMAX theatre. Take the 3 Main bus northbound on Main St. for nine stops to Terminal Ave (about ten minutes), and then walk west one block on Terminal Ave. Learn more here.
GRANVILLE ISLAND TOY COMPANY
This iconic store is located just half a block from my work space, at Main and 17th. It's an accessible, locally-owned shop, offering everything from affordable knick knacks to speciality toys.
My work space is near a residential area and a vibrant commercial district, so all the daily necessities are nearby.
SHOPPERS DRUG MART
Just half a block from my work space, this pharmacy includes a small grocery section with fresh produce and more. In front is a pocket park with a grassy hill, perfect for a post-lesson popsicle.
POST OFFICE
Three blocks north of my office is a mall that contains both a Save-On-Foods and a small stationery shop with a full-service post office at the back.
TD BANK
Just half a block from my work space (and right beside the Shoppers Drug Mart), this bank offers full teller services and a 24-hour ATM.
ORGANIC ACRES
Just a 10-minute walk from my work space, this small corner store offers organic food, health foods, and locally grown produce.
THE AUGUST MARKET
About a 10- to 15-minute walk from my work space, this small local grocer is all about affordability and neighbourhood values. They also have kombucha on tap.
SAVE-ON-FOODS
Just a 5- to 10-minute walk north of my work space, this full-size grocery store has all you need and offers pick-up and delivery services as well.
